Suggestions as to what I do next?

I have managed to prove a story that I was told by my dad when I was a little girl and which my brother and sister have never believed which was that my Dad had a younger sister. As part of this research it would appear that my Grandfather died and my Grandmother re-married and had a daughter. I have lived with that success for a bit but now want to know what happened to her. Part of my original story from my Dad was that she was adopted but we are going back to 1918 when my grandmother died and I know that adoption records were formalised at that time and feel at a brick wall and any thoughts, suggestions or guidance would be appreciated at where I can go next! Thanks Gill

Hi Gill, when you say you proved she existed, have you found her birth record?

Yes, sorry got distracted and forgot to check if anyone had any ideas! I have her birth certificate which has proved to me that she is the daughter of my grandmother by her second husband. I also have their marraige certificate.

Did the father also die? Why would she be adopted? Have you checked for a possible marriage when she grew up? Hard job, but do-able I should think - using ancestry bmd index and hopefully not too common a name. When was she born?

The idea that she was adopted was something I remember my Dad telling me - my Dad has been dead for over 30 years and it was years before he died that he told me the story! I have started looking for Dorothy's father, Henry Colin Knight, but it is a large trawling exercise as I know nothing about him and didn't know he existed until about 6 weeks ago! I will have a look to see if there are any marraiges for Dorothy as ou suggest and see what I come up with. Thanks for your suggestions, and also any more bright ideas would be welcome. Gill

Of course as adoption didnt come about til about 1927 (formally) it may just be she went to live with another relative.
