Can anyone do a quick look up 1861 Liverpool area (Lancs) for Elizabeth Ashley born abt 1835 Lancashire? Need all the details you can give including if her husband Henry is alive - is she married or widowed? Might have Esther her daughter with her born 1851. Hi Reggie. Esther was born Liverpool. I don't have any info on Henry Ashley apart from he married Elizabeth Tollet Jan q 1859 in Liverpool. Hoping the census could throw up some info. Many thanks. Liz

Hi Reggie - many thanks. Let me try and answer each one: Esther Tollet married Thomas Garrity July q 1870, had daughter Leah 1879, who died 1883. Had daughter Martha Elizabeth Garrity who is definitely right. Have her census records. Henry Ashley married Elizabeth Tollet Jan 1859 after the birth of her daughter Esther Tollet - so either second marriage or Esther was born to single mother. However have found Elizabeth Tollet b 1835 to Edward Tollet and Martha Davies on IGI so it could be she was a single mother. Yes the 1851 census for Edward and Martha Tollet with their daughter Elizabeth age 15 is correct if the theory she was a single mother is right. I have Elizabeth Ashley b1835 living with Esther and Thomas Garrity in 1881 c. She has occupation of sewer (books). Widow then. Thanks Jeanette - will wait for your's and Reggie's deliberations...Edward and Martha Tollet had a son Thomas Tollet christened 1835. Could he have married a Leah. His neice Esther could have named her daughter Leah after his wife? Could they be the Sollets you found? Liz

Jeanette.........sorry for delay........been offline for the evening. The image looks like Tollitt........and Esther's age and birthplace would fit, but the mother's birthplace is given as London, Middlesex. If the Elizabeth who married Henry Ashley is definitely Esther's mother, then that would rule out this one............(I'd love to know what her forename actually is!! ) As you so rightly remark, the writing is very difficult to fathom...... Elizabeth with right yr of birth comes up on IGI as child of Edward Tollet and Martha Davies. Colette from Liverpool & SW lancs Genealogy Forum has been helping me and unearthed the Tollets. I am helping a close friend with this tree and he is only willing to buy certs which help him go back on the Ronnan side of the tree...I had just hoped to find Esther Tollet on 1861 census before she married and after her mother married Henry Ashley (he died 1880 and Elizabeth his wife died 1886 according to BMD) Do Henry and Elizabeth Ashley show up at all in 1871 census?
