HOW DO I FIND OUT ABOUT THIS SORT OF WORK THAT PEOPLE DID IN THE 1800S ??

If it is a female that you have found 'in service' then she was some sort of maid or servant - housemaid, scullery maid, etc. Just means they did some sort of housework. Kath. x
