Attended School in 1850?

I think young children often attended school. I am not sure when five became the normal starting age. My grandmother was a teacher and I have a picture of her with her class about 1895 and some of the children look very young. My mother in law was the youngest of thirteen children and her eldest sister told me she would have to take the baby to school as both her parents worked. I have one six month old described as a scholar but I think that was a bit optimistic.

That gives me hope then, that the census could be correct. Thank you very much, Tony and Gwyn. :)

I have seen 3 years old children as 'scholar' in the census and thought it rather young. I can't remember exact details, as they weren't 'mine'. Gwyn

I have ancestors who briefly lived in America in 1850. Four children are listed on the New Jersey census, ages: 7, 3 and twins 7/12 months....Both the 7 and 3 year olds are shown as 'attended school within the year.' The father WAS a teacher, but has anyone else seen a three year old at school???
