Hi I am thinking of sending off for one of my ancestors siblings births at the Lambeth Register Office in London. The birth took place in 1877 as I want to see my ggg granfathers actual original signature when he registered the birth. I already have a GRO copy of the cert, which as you know wont contain the original signature. Will Lambeth registry Office send me a copy of the original cert or the GRO copy again. Thanks en |

I dont know the answer, but i would check first they will send any cert at all, as most london RO dont issue certs for family research |

Hi I have just emailed Lambeth office and asked if they do issue certs. All I need to do is wait and hope they do. Thanks Ben |

If the London Office do issue Certs, check that they will actually photocopy the original. I have had local Offices that do a transcription, so you could get something that was written only a day or two ago, even worse than GRO! |

Hi Helen That is what I was worried about. Whether they'd send me a paltry handwritten copy written only a few days ago, copied from the original book or a typed up one. I better contact them again and ask if they will photocopy the original as I dont want to send off for one and get a disappointment when I open it if it is a freshly written up or typed transcription. ben |

Some of the GRO certificates are copies of what is in the actuall register book - they are litually photocopies of the book. I have My birth cert, my parents birth certs and my parents marriage certs from the GRO and all have original signatures on them. these range fron 1949 to 1983. I also have older certs from GRO that my family say contain original signatures as thay are sure that the signature is genuine. Lunar |

I received 3 certificates from GRO (ordered online) last month ..... all are photocopies of the originals, reduced in size to fit 8½ x 11' paper (landscape style). This means some of the writing is a little difficult to read because it is reduced. In 2004 I ordered 3 certificates through the Registrar ...... and they are all present-day copies of the origial, on official 'true copy' forms, so they are the same size as the originals ......but are not original writing. Does that make sense??? |
