Hello, I am trying to track down a GRO reference for Jack Morton born c1910. I think, from speaking to relatives that his mother would have been living in Parsons Cross,Sheffield. The problem is that the only two GRO references so far are in Huddersfield and Sculcoates, neither of which seem to be the right area. Any ideas or help with this would be much appreciated. Lesley

Hello, To 'still looking for Santa' I believe that you have struck gold with this one! I know that Jack was in his 90's when he died and that would probably have been 2004. My Dad always thought that Jack was born in 1910 but perhaps not. He would have been living in Eccleshall /Eccleshall Bierlow at the time of his death. I don't think you realise just how pleased I am to have had your help on this one, his parentage has always been a big secret in my Dad's family and he has always wanted to know the truth. Where did you find the birth reference? I must have missed it somehow. Thankyou again for your detective work. I will apply for his birth certificate. Would you like to know the outcome? Lesley

Eccleshall Bierlow was a registration area which covered a much larger area than the present day Eccleshall suburb of Sheffield. Registration County : Yorkshire West Riding. Created : 1.7.1837. Abolished : 1.4.1935 (succeeded by Sheffield and Chesterfield districts). Sub-districts : Bramhall; Dore; Ecclesall Bierlow; Ecclesall Central; Ecclesall North; Ecclesall South; Ecclesall West; Nether Hallam; Norton; Sharrow; Upper Hallam. GRO volumes : XXII (1837-51); 9c (1852-1935)..

To Peter, Thankyou for that information, that has confirmed my thought that this is indeed the Jack Morton I am looking for. Thanks Lesley

Hi Lesley I'm thrilled for you :-)) Fingers crossed it's the right one. I found it by going to ancestry and only putting in his name/yorks and rough year. I saw the two you found as they were the only two with the year 1910. I went on a bit further and found that death....then looked for a birth in 1912....found it and bobs ya uncle! lol I'd love to know when you get the cert and hope it opens some secret doors for you. Happy searching Gerri x
