Birth in a convent?

How would I get details on a convent where my halfBrother was born, all I know was he was born in a convent in 1960. I don't know his name or place of birth. I do however, know the name of his parents. I don't know where to even start looking, his mother at the time was 14 and my Dad was 16 and they obviously weren't married at the time, so would he be in his Mom's name or Dad's name? I have aleady contacted the Father Hudson Society and they could find no information. Who, what or where should I be contacting to try and find this information? I cannot go onto the Adoption Contact Register because of the lack of information. Does anybody know of any Catholic Societies or someone that could help? Many Thanks. |

Probably not a convent but a catholic home for unmarried mothers. do you have any ideas of his name or any info to start a search |

Have you got his birth certificate? That might narrow down the area a bit, then you could find out which church/ churches were in the area and contact them for information. |

I dodn't know if it existed at the time but I was born in 1984 and I was adopted through the Catholic Childrens Rescue Society. It might be worth trying there. |

Stella, if you give me the rough area you think your half brother may have been born, i can give you a list of Convents taking in unmarried mothers, and babies, also catholic homes etc... but i do need a location of sorts... there was over 2000 in the UK :)) |

No I wouldn't have thought the birth was in Ireland!!! She was sent to a convent or catholic mothers home somewhere from the Wolverhampton area. |

If it was in England, the birth reg is most likely under mother's surname with same name for mmn. Don't forget in 1960 many girls were 'sent away' to a relative if they were pregnant - so the birth may not have taken place in the area where the mother's parents lived. Start at 1960 and work both ways through the birth reg. Jay |
