Hi Jenna I think the only way of checking up that Eliza is not some sort of misprint is to obtain a few of the children's birth certs which will show mother's maiden names. They should also give you a timeframe in which to look for death of first wife or possible divorce. One of my ancestors committed bigamy by the way - I think it was fairly common for that to happen. He was mentioned in a court case in the Times when he was accused by his second wife - so it may be worth checking the Times online for the period and for a time after the second 'marriage' just in case first wife brought a case against him. (One possible alternative is that first wife may have ended up in an asylum/hospital and not died for some time - don't like that idea though!) Good luck with the hunting. Jill |

From what I've found there are children being born from 1869, 1870,1872, 1873, 1875, 1877, 1878 and 1880. From What I've managed to find George married Eliza in 1875. |

I have a John Gorrod who married three times (I have the certificates) 1840's to 1850's. The second was to Emma, the sister of his deceased first wife (Illegal). I can't find a death for the second wife, though. |

Jenna, its unlikely they divorced if they were run of the mill people. Have you considered the first wife may have died? Oh, see you say you cant find a death cert - where have you looked, freebmd is not complete. Is there a pattern with the kids - I mean can you see one being born say early 1870s and then no more? |

Hi Jenna, There is a Divorces & Matrimonial Causes register covering 1858 to 1903 on findmypast(.)com (used to be 1837online) but you have to subscribe in order to access it. You can however carry out a search for free. I put in the name George Corby and there were no results. Now I don't how extensive this database is, but I think it was quite expensive to get a divorce. I have some relatives in my tree who just forgot about their previous marriage and either remarried bigamously or simply lived together, calling themselves 'Mr & Mrs'. |

I have a George Corby born 1842 in Essex married a Hannah Hayden born 1846 in the 4th quarter 1866 in Saffron Waldon, this is shown on the 1871 census, but then on the 1881 census the wife changes to a Eliza Corby born 1852. I've found a marriage ref for George and Eliza in 1875, but I've not found a death cert for Hannah so who would I go about finding a divorce record for the first marriage? Cheers Jenna |
