Alan Just to clarify - I have seen the words 'Sealing of the Dead', and usually a date, but no other details - clicking on it tells me the information is private. OC

Fee Looks like a straightforward typo to me! Died in March, buried on the 9th - 1873 should read 1673. OC

Alan I have DEFINITELY seen 'Sealings of the Dead' in the IGI records in the course of general searches. From memory though, the sealings took place many years ago - say late 1800s, early 1900s? I do appreciate that the information is private. OC

Everyone has to learn - thats what its about! Just look down the page on the IGI and if it says extracted info and has some batch numbers then its much more likely to be accurate. Stay clear of ones that have things like 'Mrs John Smith born about 1678' - thats a real definite guess!

Thanks OC that has cleared it up for me. Tracing my relatives is a new experience for me, i have been doing t for just a few months really. So Im sorry if i appear to be a cloth ears. Some of the IGI make interesting reading, whilst others appear to be plainly ridiculous. Thanks everyone Fee

Ok, Thanks for that info Heather. Many of the ancesters in that particular line in my family married 2 or 3 times (not at the same time).Almost as tho the husband 'disposed of the wife' soon after marriage. What with that and being buried 200 years after dying, I was begining to wonder what sort of people they were!

Fee Yes, you do have to be a Mormon to do this - but your Ancestors don't! Part of the religious duty of the Mormons, is to trace at least four generations of their Ancestors, in order to identify and baptise them into the Mormon faith. Some Mormons are better than others at doing this accurately, as the IGI demonstrates, sometimes. Of course, these people who are your ancestors, may very well be theirs too. OC

Heather Report 7 Dec 2006 14:33

Oh its very usual if its submitted info. Ive had people dying before they were born and big bros being fathers to younger bros (even though it means they would have been only 7 at the time!) I also had a girl marrying when she was 6 months old!!! It doesnt matter what religion an ancestor was - the Mormons try to baptise every ancestor they can find posthumously - thats the whole reason for the IGI originally! The fact we use it to look up people on there is just a handy by product. So it just means a living Mormon convert has been trying to add to their list of ancestors they have saved.

It is something i will have to look into O C. Dont you have to be a Mormon tho to do this? I assumed that they were C of E. Mind you i dont know for sure. Thanks OC Fee

Are you sure it is a burial and not a 'Sealing of the Dead'. Sealing of the Dead is when Mormons baptise people posthumously, in order to ensure that the families are reunited in the afterlife. Mormons do not usually record death details. OC

Check with the local Area office. One of my husbands Great grandmothers died in 1808 but was reburied in 1966, could be a similar reason for yours. Carrie

Information from the IGI, unless it states 'Extracted from source', should be taken with a pinch of salt. Burials aren't generally placed on the IGI at all, but you'd definitely need to check it with the local records office.

I saw on the IGI today a relative whose birth, death and burial details were listed. It seems he was buried nearly 200 years after his death! Is this usual? What on earh happened to him in the years following his death, but before his burial. I have horrible visions of his body being laid out on the table in the parlour......brrrr.
