I am trying to find the marriage of a Bertram Wilkinson (born 1908 Stockton on Tees), who I know married a Mabel but I don't know her surname. On Ancestry I have found a marriage of a Bertram Wilkinson to a Vida M Lawes, which took place during the 2nd quarter of 1936 in Whitchurch, reference 6a 2089. However in my atlas there are 9 Whitchurch's up and down the country! Does anyone know how I can narrow it down? The only other information I know is that Bertram's father (James) died in 1920 and that Bert & Mabel lived in (or near) London, certainly in the 1940's . . . . . because my late parents spent their honeymoon with them. Any help would be appreciated. |

If you know his birth year and place you should be able to locate his birth cert - that will give you his father's name. That way, when you order a marriage cert you will be able to confirm if it is the correct one by the father's name stated on it. The marriage entry you found could quite possibly be the one - the 'M' could stand for Mabel - and many people used their middle names instead of their first name. I have quite a few relatives who did this. |

Thankyou Shirley. I forgot to put in my message that the reference number alongside the marriage I found was 6a 2089 and his father's name was James. Children . . . . I don't know, but I have a feeling they didn't have any. |

Reggie - well done - with such an unusual name like that I would think that would be her - so not a Mabel then, after all. Unless Mabel was a pet name... (e.g. an aunt of mine is named May but everyone calls her Maisie). |

Ancestry shows the death registration of a Vida May WILKINSON, with birthdate June 1903. A Vida May LAWES birth was registered in Sept. Q. 1903. This may be the person whose marriage you found or it may have nothing to do with your quest. Gwyn |

Thankyou folks, I knew I could rely on Genes members. I now have a few leads to follow up later today when I have a little more time. Thankyou! I do wonder if the marriage I found was Vida May, if so it wasn't Mabel. Could be back to the drawing board . . . . again!!! |
