I have Archibald Brown . in scotland whos mother and father were William Brown and Margaret Campbell. Archibald married in 1897 aged 24 and on marriage cert these were his parents. Well i found on 1861 cencus Willliam Brown aged 30 abt 1831 a son .Margaret Campbell 24 in 1837 a daughter Samuel Campbell 18 1843 a son and who i think is head Elizabeth Kier 47 b 1814.Do you think brother and sister could of married as maybe they had different fathers and mother remained in her maiden name. Avril I think you need to see the original census image to sort this out.....Sorry I know nothing about viewing Scotland records. Looking at Ancestry's transcriptions (which is where I guess you have got the info?) I would suggest it has been mistranscribed. My best GUESS is that Samuel and Margaret are brother and sister given their age difference. Elizabeth Keir could be their mother who was originally a Campbell (either maiden name or by first marraige) who married a Keir. William could be a lodger (not son) who married the landlady's daughter! As I said just guesswork but I very much doubt Margaret and William were brother and sister. Chris |

Avril Wasn't sure what you were asking when I first read your post, but no, brother and sister could not have married, that was, and still is, incest, and even in the unlikely event that it WAS incest, the family would not have broadcast the fact to the Enumerator, thus attracting a term of imprisonment or worse! A possibility is cousin! I have similar ones in my tree, Same name, same birth year as cousin and same names for parents. Very confusing. No as OC says no way could siblings marry . It was the question of consanguinity...then and now.. There will be an answer. M |

Are you sure you have the right family? I've got a Scottish branch on my tree and I've noticed that the same Christian names and surnames crop up regularly. I have followed the wrong trail a few times. Unfortunately Margaret Campbell and William Brown sound like pretty common names to me. I would try looking for the marriage cert of William and Margaret then you would have their parents names too. Good luck! |
