Been on GRO site to order a marriage cert. It says new you have to register, i filled out the form and submitted it, it wouldn't accept, saying that my email address was already registered with them. how can this be so as i have never used GRO before, this is my first time thankyou

If I were you, I would have ordered from the registry office direct, in which the marriage was registered. I have always used the registry office to the area in which the Bmd's were registered, they are more helpful and quicker.

You could always give them a ring and ask the question. otherwise if you know the correct Register Office write to them with full details, name place date etc and any other facts depending on type of certificate e.g. maiden name, mother & fathers name etc Cheque for £7.00 and a SAE.

Do they still have the 'guest login' option. I haven't used the GRO for a cert for ages but always used the guest option. The only drawback to a local office for a marriage cert is that they usually ask for the name of the wedding venue because each venue has its own register. Lincoln for example have over 170 different registers just to cover the Lincoln registration district in 1908. Without knowing the church/chapel they cannot conduct a search for a marriage as it ties up the staff for too long. Births and deaths are a different matter though and they will search for a few years either side of the year without a problem.

I always use the guest login facility (it's still there), as I don't want them to keep my details. I'd give that a try, and if it still won't accept your email address, then give them a ring and ask why not, (but don't order the certificate over the phone or it will cost you more). Kath. x

Thankyou all very much. The thread i read about gro and local registry offices, just confused me, some of the repplies are so long, they lost me half way through, but you 5 (sorry for not putting ur names, keep it short lol) have done a great job of explaining it to me, short and sweet. THANX AGAIN xxx Pat
