Today i have received marriage cert for James Arthur Appleton b1894/95 (according to army papers & age on death cert), father William Appleton (blacksmith). He married & died in Hulme Manchester & had a brother William There is one 1901 census record for a James A Appleton that fits everything except puts him as b1897. Another census fits year of birth, father & brother called William but fathers occupation doesnt match & James isnt recorded as James A just James!!!! Would really like to know if anyone could give me their opinion as to which census entry they would go with, many thanks. |

I'd go with the one born 1897 if everything else fits. He could have lied to get into the army and then just kept up the pretence of being older than he actually was. My dad's age is wrong on his army papers!! Kath. x |

I would go with the son of the blacksmith. The other one isn't born Hulme. Anyway 4 in the 1901 could be birth year of 1896 as census could be before birthday. Also people lied about age to get into army. Janice |

Im gonna have to eat humble pie with this one, i've been bikkering with my dad for weeks that the census would be accurate about his age, but i makes sense & i think your probably right, thanks for sharing your opinions, might keep it quite from my dad for a bit though, lol |
