What is exactly is BMD??

I know that it is Birth, Marriage and Death records but I dont understand what it really tells you? Does anyone get me? Amy xx |

It gives you the year and quarter that a particular Birth, Marriage or Death was registered. It also gives you the place (district) and the reference number enabling you to order certificates at a lower cost as the GRO don't have to go searching for the record. For deaths it will give you the age a person died, for marriages after about 1910 (might have the year wrong) it will give you the surname of the other party, and for births from around the same time, it will give the mothers maiden name.
