Please tell me how to do a soundex search on Ancestry. The only way I know of is to not click on the 'exact' option, but other than that it just gives you all sorts.

I nearly had a heart attack when I saw my name in a subject heading!!!! Hi Andrea Soundex works much better if you are searching a specific census rather than on the general front page. I leave the Exat selling box ticked, but to the right of the last name there is a Spelling' box. The default is 'Exact', but the other option is 'Soundex'. You still may have to do a bit of trawling, but the more information you can enter on the main search, the less trawling you'll need to do. Hopefully it will be of use to you, it's certainly helped me find relatives in the past ... for instance my gt grandfather has been transcribed as Danielson on the 1901 census, (even though the image is clearly Daniells), I spent ages looking for him on the census, even going through each original document in Islington (where he lived). Good luck!!!! Richard

Thanks Richard. Sorry it took me so long to come back and say thanks. I got fed up of the PC and it's hiccups because of that stupid advert of Barry Mannilow so I haven't been on since. I'm off to try it out now!! Thanks again. UPDATE Well, whaddya know!! I've never used the exact search thing as it never turned up any results. Never noticed the 'exact or soundex' option at the other side. I mean, who would think that you could do an exact soundex search!!!!!? Was it just me that missed that?? Oh well, better late than never. Let's hope it helps me find these blighters that are driving me nuts!
