Thanks Portland Rose, You have unknowingly solved a puzzle for me. I have a army relative whose army birth cert states son of Corporal B.. and wife R. yet the birth is 1839 and when I sent off for marriage cert it was 1843. Your answer on this thread might be the solution. M |

My grandparents married twice - my grandmother was catholic and grandfather wasn't so they married in a C of E church. Later my grandad became a catholic so they married again in a catholic church, so there are two marriage certificates. The only difference is my grandmother lied about her age on the first saying she was younger but by the second she had owned up to being older than her husband!! Julie |

Was the husband in the army? Quite often people had to prove they were married so the spouse could receive housing, benefits, etc. Sometimes people lost the first marriage cert and had to remarry. Seen this quite a few times in the army or navy. Rose |

Anyone got any ideas why a couple would register the marriage twice? I have a marriage cert for my 2 x g/parents dated 14/03/1884 in dover, there is another entry for sept qtr 1885 in hartlepool. Is it worth buying the 2nd? and if it is the same couple(all names match) which one is correct? |
