Hi Kerry. Do you think this could be the right people ? I have added the things in ( ) from the actual scan 1871 Census about John Ford Rainforth Name: John Ford Rainforth Age: 12 Estimated birth year: abt 1859 Relation: Son Father's name: John Douge (I think this should be Tonge not Douge) Mother's name: Mary Ann Gender: Male Where born: Henty, Staffordshire, England Civil parish: St Mary Ecclesiastical parish: St Mary County/Island: Somerset Country: England Registration district: Bridgewater Sub-registration district: Bridgewater ED, institution, or vessel: 5 Household schedule number: 15 Household Members: Name Age John Douge Rainforth 31 (head--master Jeweller--Lincoln Lincs) John Ford Rainforth 12 ( son --born Stafford Handley) Mary Ann Rainforth 32 (wife--born Yorks Halifax) Eliza Yendle 38 ( --serv--born Somerset Bridgewater) Source Citation: Class: RG10; Piece: 2386; Folio: 6; Page: 4; GSU roll: 835108. There is a marriage index for March (quarter) 1868 Mary Ann Roberts and John Tonge Rainforth dist Croydon 2a 213 I'm not sure of this because of the district !!! Barbara |

Ive also found that if a child is very young when a father dies and the mother remarries the name of his father can be confused by memory. For example John becomes James or something because by then mum is dead and he has no one to ask. Also though step children often adopt the step fathers name on census when it comes to a marriage or army service they always seem to revert to the birth fathers name. |

Thankyou very much! The visitor there Thomas Ford is mentioned on the marriage certificate as one of those 'in the prescense of' people so it does look like this could be the correct person. Thankyou for your help, this gives me something to look for... |

Thats the story ive been thinking. the other idea is that as it says deceased under his name, his mother re-married into the name rainforth hence he inherited it, as his full name is john ford roberts rainforth, it also includes the last name roberts. im just looking for any ideas, but i expect birth certificate is the way to go. the other problem with the marriage certificate is that her fathers name is mentioned and ive found him in the censuses however she is never mentioned as living with him, she is only mentioned years later as a boarder in im taking as a school...??? |

The info on a marriage cert is only 'as given' by the happy couple........ It may be that his mum told him her little secret just before he got married!! Hve you located his birth cert? Reg |

Ive recently acquired a marriage certificate for one of my relatives, however his fathers name is different then what i expected, its roberts. my grandfathers name was rainforth. i dont understand that. When i type in Hugh roberts in ancestry it is not recognised anywhere!! |
