My Gt Grandfather Henry Cook was born in 1873 in London C. according to his birth reg. I presume this means London Central. My mother remembers him talking about Chaney Walk, he named his house in Wales after it. I think I found him on the 1881 census living in Poplar, Bow. Is Chaney Walk around there. Can anyone help please. Suzanne

Hi Do you think he meant Cheyne Walk in SW3 (Chelsea). This is pronounced Chaney and was a mixture of well-to do and working class familes in the 19th Century. Malcolm

The posh one is in Chelsea - Millionaires row! Perhaps his mum was in service there?? Have a google to see if there is another one - but London C isnt London E. Did he actually spell in the same way as you have? Why dont you buy his birth certificate and see where the exact place of birth is, plus mum and dads names and dads occupation?? You will need those if you intend to go back any further.

Just checked the Victorian London A to Z (you can google for it) These are the only ones and none spelt as Chaney: Cheyne Walk, All Saints, CHELSEA [1862] Cheyne Walk, Chelsea SW3 [1997] Cheyne Walk, Hendon NW4 [1997] Cheyne Walk, West Brompton SW10 [1997] Cheyne Walk, Winchmore Hill N21

Thanks for all your help. Looks like the plot thickens. I can't order his birth cert as I don't know exactly when and where he was born. I only know when and where he died. I ordered his daughters birth cert but it only tells me his name and occupation. I am having the same problem with my other Gt grandfather. The only thing I can think of is to wait for the next census to come out at least then I have grandparents info to go on. So frustrating!!! Suzanne

what about his marriage cert? thats a step back from his daughter birth??? should give his age, so you could narrow down his DOB from that? doesn't his death cert give an age or DOB? between marriage and death info you might be able to pin him down

Does the death cert say where they were born? Thats the main problem. Have figured out the year he was born but there are so many with the same name. Suzanne

No death cert just gives a date, but that is only as good as the informant. Depends on who registers the death

just thought if you get his marriage cert, it will give his fathers name. this will help you narrow it down via census info.
