Hi Thanks for the information, I have sent away for my Grandparents marriage certificate to see what is on that, I think maybe nan was a widow or she had the child out of wedlock, but in them days you were married fairly quick, if she wasnt a widow then the question is why did they wait 3 years to get married. Dad has seen his sisters birth certificate and it says Harrison which is our name. Some strange going ons in them days. Thanks everyone its much appreicated. Regards Yvonne |

You don't have to be married to enter the fathers name. He just has to agree and attend the registration (or sign a statutory declaration) (since 1875). Unmarried parents who later marry can change the surname if they both agree. I think this was not allowed until 1926 but could be backdated. A new cert is issued and the original 'closed' not altered. Bob |

Yvonne, I know I've seen this before but can't remember the details. I don't think the information on the birth certificate was changed but possibly the father allowed his name to be used.. I hope someone can clarify this for you. Heather |

Need advice again.. My grandmother had a daughter in the 1903 and on the birth certificate it says her surname is Harrison, but the child was 3 when my Grandmother and Grandfather got married, the child is believed to be half sister to my dad, would it have been possible in the late 1800's to changed the childs surname on the birth certificate? Much appreicated Yvonne |
