No, Pauline, it was a year in prison - if you got caught, and most people didn't get caught. Only 100 years later, by us nosey lot! OC

Well if that is so, they both committed bigamy then because Julia married again in 1879 to William Davies, and James married for a second time to Hannah Starling in 1878. What a wicked lot my family were - lol. Even my great grandmother was a bigamist. Declared herself a widow after her first husband was committed to the local asylum, and went on to marry the chap she had become housekeeper to. How scandalous!! I thought that bigamy was a hanging offence back then. Thanks for your input. PP xx

Extremely unlikely to be divorced in the 1870s, unless they were very wealthy, but not impossible. Usually, people just committed bigamy, in my experience! OC

there wasn't any divorce then . Unless you were VERY rich and had influence in parliament. Couples just separated and then some went on to marry again bigamously Have you looked for a death for her between the census and him remarrying Shirley

Where can I find records of divorce back then? What I am needing confirmation of is a divorce between James T Flamank and his wife Julia, sometime between 1871 when they are shown as married in the census, and 1878 when James marries again. PP xx
