I was wondering if you could help me solve this tangle? Am trying to trace Mary Ann Easton and her parents William Easton and Marry Ann Easton nee Penfold. Clara Adams Born 25 Feb 1883 Stoney Lane Hailsham Sussex. Parents – Alfred Adams and Mary Ann Easton Alfred Adams 22 marries Mary Ann Easton 21. 11 November 1876 Croydon parish church Alfred’s father Peter Mary Ann’s William Witnesses John Briggs and Kate Easton. Mary Ann Easton born 9 April 1856 Carshalton Surrey Parents William Easton and Mary Ann Penfold. William Easton 30 marries Mary Ann Penfold 21 9 July 1854 Croydon parish church Williams Father William Mary Ann’s Father Thomas Witnesses James Worley? And Hannah Clarke Census Info 1901 Clara is a servant in Carshalton. Unmarried as she married 1906 RG 13/579 57 3 Mary Ann Snr died 1900 1891 no definite sighting of Clara Mary Ann Jnr has remarried after the death of first husband William 1880 In Carshalton. William Baldock H 50 Sussex Polegate Mary A Baldock W62 Hants Portsmouth Ada Easton dau 22 Surrey Carshalton 1881 Clara’s Parents Stoney Lane Hailsham Alfred Adams 26 Blacksmith Born Hailsham Mary A Adams 24 Born Carshalton Alfred 4 Hailsham Walter 10 mths Hailsham RG11/1041 In Sutton Robert Gardiner 27 Uxbridge Middx Kate E Gardiner 24 Carshalton Surrey Kate J Gardiner 4 mths Sutton Surrey Mary A Easton widow Mother in law 49 Croydon Surrey Ada Easton sis in law 10 Carshalton Surrey Alice M Easton sis in law 9 Carshalton Surrey Mary A Gardiner sister 29 Uxbridge Middx RG11/758 5 3 This is Mary Ann Senior living with her married daughter plus two younger un- married daughters. Sister Kate despite being born in Carshalton and living there marries in Croydon. Dec 1880 (free bmd) Same as Mary Ann senior and jnr???? Why??? Note Mary Ann senior place of birth has changed???? And not to somewhere just down the road, it’s a major change!!! Everything else adds up just not her place of birth. 1871 In Carshalton William Easton 50 Sussex Battle Mary Ann 39 Hampshire Portsmouth Henry 19 Surrey Croydon. Mary Ann 15 Surrey Carshalton Kate Elena 13 Surrey Carshalton William 10 Surrey Carshalton George 7 Surrey Carshalton Ada ? 2 Surrey Carshalton 1861 Still in Carshalton William Easton 40 Sussex Slinfold Mary A 29 Hants Portsmouth Henry 9 Surrey Croydon Mary A 4 Surrey Carshalton Kate E 2 Surrey Carshalton I thought I had the same throughout but something doesn’t add up!!! Why does Mary Ann senior’s place of birth change in 1881???? I think it’s her throughout because… in 1861 She’s got two daughters and her son with her, then again in 1871. In 1881 she’s living with her married daughter and got an unmarried daughter with her who was also there in 1871. The unmarried daughter is also with her in 1891. Tie everything in nicely except for her place of birth… just an error??? And going backwards to 1851, the only Mary Ann Penfold I can find with father Thomas was born in Buckland Kent… And 1841 the only Mary with father Thomas again is in Wallington ( a division of Croydon) and all it says it that she wasn’t born in that county!!! Something just doesn’t seem right can some one look over my work and see if I’ve gone wrong?

I think the enumerators in 1881 had a bit too much to drink when they went out. My GGGrandmother, who was born in London, is down as being born in Sheffield!

Hi Shelli, There's an extracted baptism record on the IGI for Mary Ann Penfold, christened 08 Dec 1833 at St Thomas, Portsmouth, Hants., parents Thomas Penfold and Jane. Going to have a look in the 1851 census for you, but it looks as if the 1881 census entry might just be a mistake. Like you say, it's the only thing that doesn't add up.

Tracy oh now that is interesting, in the past I've had differingthings on cencus, but whenit's been place ofbirth they've been close together. I wonder if her son in law answered for her, but didn't really know just guessed. After al he'd only been married toher daughter for under a yr!!!! Christine ooh thanks for that Think the 1851 and the 1841 are different familes as in 1851 Both Mary ANd Thomas are born in Kent while in 1841she isn't born in Surrey but she is with a Thomas and a Jane. So makes sense, i think

You're welcome, Shelli. I can't find anything else in the 1851 census. Didn't think I would really, but maybe two sets of eyes could have been better than one. Not mine though, lol :-)

I can't see anything obvious (apart from the one you have) in 1851 either.
