If it states on a Marriage Banns in 1760 that the groom was 'from Wem in the County of Shropshire' does that mean he was born there or that he was born elsewhere but was living and working in that area at the time of his marriage. Can anyone help?

Lavinia Where have you got a marriage cert from the 1700s from?! If you tell me it has been handed down your family, I shall give this genealogy up in favour of basket weaving! OC

Sorry Lavinia No such thing a a marriage cert in 1760!!!!!!! What document are you looking at? Would suggest it could mean either that he was born there, or that he was living there, would probably depend on what you're looking at regards looby

Lavinia If he was from an outside area from where the marriage happened then it is often noted in the parish records. OC Im already a basket case!

Lavinia, I think it will mean that he was living there at the time of the marriage. Kate.

I presume that you are actually looking at an entry in the parish records, since, as has already been pointed out, there is no such thing as a marriage certificate prior to 1837. Sorry to disappoint you, but I have marriage entries for ancestors where they did not marry in the place in which they were born, but are shown as either 'of this parish' or 'of the parish of xxxxx'. Presumably, therefore, this is the parish where they were living at the time of the marriage. Not very helpful when trying to find their baptism entry, is it! Tina
