Start with your self and work backwards. ie, start with yourself and your birth then your parrents marriage this will give you their ages and their fathersa name. From this you can find their births as you'll have an approxamate birth year. you can then continue like this until 1837ish if your lucky. 1841 - 1901 censuses will give you more about siblings and extended families. When you know when your grandfather was born and when his parents were born you can start looking at the BMD (Birth, marriage and death) index for his sisters births. below is the address for ancestry incase you've not yet found the site. BMD's are free on the site but you do need to register as a guest first. remove () from address http://www.ancestry(.)co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx

Cherry Start with the info you know, order your grandad's brith certificate, this will give you your ggrandma's maiden name - do you know if he was the oldest. If so, you can search backwards and find the marriage, and forwards through the birth records to find the sisters. As long as it's after 1911 the index will show you the mothers maiden name and this with the district should help you narrow it down, especially if it's not a common surname. The indexes are free at the moment on Ancestry - but you might have to register. Good hunting, if you want someone to have a look for you to confirm you're doing it right, just post some info and I'm sure someone will look for you. regards Looby
