I am trying to find the baptism of James William John Bateman, London (ish) 1820 or earlier. James William John BATEMAN married Jane Louisa Johnson in 1834 at Spitalfields Christchurch. Witnesses were Richard Johnson (Jane's father) and Robert Root who witnessed many marriages at that church). A few baptisms on IGI for James Bateman rough area and year but not for James William John. So how do I know which is him? I have him on the 1841 as William and Jane is a widow by 51. I don't know of any siblings to James William. Any ideas?

Hi Selena The problem with London is they moved there from all over the place I also have ancestors who married at spittlefields but they were mariners who came down from Yorkshire. Sheila

Hi Selena Where did you find them in 1841, and how do you know that you have the right couple? Where was Jane, widow in 1851. I think that you are looking at a birth year for him of nearer 1813 than 1820 or he would have been only 14 when he married. Maureen

Thanks both. They did move around a little bit. They were living in Tower Hamlets, Shoreditch for 41 with their children - I have no doubt they are the right family. Jane is on 51 with her children living next door to her future 2nd husband who she married later that year. Later lived in Deptford. I agree about the approx year of birth, William 20 and Jane 25 on the 41, rounded down I expect. Also on the 41, next door is a Samuel Bateman but I cannot connect him with James William Bateman. Thanks for the comments, Selena
