Hi all, just been told that this General George Snooks was from between 17 & 18 hundreds, from the civil war in the USA, he is apparently off my grandads side (Nathan Alfred Whittaker) so if this bit of info helps please could someone check it out if possible. Thankyou Denise.

Hello Denise The last census that we have access to at the moment is 1901 - they legally cannot be released until 100 years after they were completed. The only way of looking for siblings that I know of is checking the BMD records for children born with the same surname and mothers maiden name - like Barbara Nelson has already done earlier in this thread. If you already have some ideas of his brothers and sisters names then you can search for these directly. It can take some time but is worth it! And if the area has been well transcribed then FreeBMD will show you the results really quickly! Good luck in the search :o) Cheryl

Hi everyone , thanks again for all your searching, i recieved my dads birth cert today so found out his parents names they were Nathan Alfred Whittaker ans Suie Whittaker- (maiden name= Sewell) Also found out the address where my dad (Fred Whittaker dob:09/03/1925) was born it was: 41 Holles Street, Grimsby, so if there is someone that doesn't mind doing a search to see who else lived here aound the time of my dads birth i might find out who my dads siblings were. ORANGEBLOSSOM-Tracy: as far as i know my dad Fred was either the youngest or one of the youngest, i was told (probably only Jess is still living). What a wonderful voyage you are starting on There is a Fred Whittaker in the 1925 first qtr Grimsby 7a 958 mother's name Sewell and you can send away for the cert and start from there

Your first task is to find the entry for Fred Whittaker's birth on the GRO index - hopefully this will be listed in the first or possibly second (6 weeks are allowed to register a birth) quarter of 1925. The index entry will show mother's maiden surname but you will need to purchase the birth certificate to find Fred's parents full names, his dad's occupation and their address when he was born. Then start searching the indexes for Fred's brothers and sisters - the mother's maiden name and district will help to narrow down the search, and for his parents' marriage. The indexes are online on Ancestry and on 1837online, you have to view the images of the index pages to see if the entry you want is listed. You can purchase certificates from the GRO or possibly the register office where the event took place - £7 per certificate, don't use any websites that charge more than this. Good hunting

I am new to all this and i don't really know much about my family i get told different stories all the time when i ask. I was wondering if anybody could help my dad was called Fred Whittaker dob: 09/03/1925, he died in 1983 which i didn't know before untill i found it in the death indexes, i think he was born in Grimsby/Humberside, the thing is i'm not sure where to go from here as i can't find anything about his mum/dad, was told his dad was called Nathan/Nathaniel and born in London and he had a blacksmiths shop there around 1880/1890 there is supposed to be a photo but i can't find anything so not sure if any of this is true, mother was called sue/susan, sorry don't know any yrs of bmd's, was also told my dad (Fred) had brothers and sisters; Tom, Bill, Frank m, Jack, Aude,Joan,Jess,Ive, i don't know yrs again or if these are correct names, really sorry not much to go on, but any info could help..... thanks from Denise
