I haven't had the problem when loading my own tree - but if I try loading any of those 'to which I have access' it's a nightmare and I've stopped bothering to try. The only way is to open them in the old format. I have found though that you can 'drag and drop' data directly from IGI into the fields in the new format... except that one or two of the 'date' fields are too short (eg: Date of Marriage knocks off the final 2 digits of the year... aaaargh!). Wouldn't it be helpful to have a 'Title' field for all those Revs, Drs, Captains, Sirs, etc??? Simon, in Newbury, Berks |

I always change to Immediate family when viewing any tree as it comes up straight away. Also if you go to old tree on same line you get your old tree then in top right hand corner look t trees you can see and click go and you can see their tree in the old way. |

Lots of people I've spoken to have the same problem. We've concluded that the new tree viewer simply doesn't work properly. One way of getting the new viewer to open after it freezes is to select immediate family view. Forget the whole tree - it is just too slow and is full of errors when it eventually displays in any case. Worryingly quite a few of my regular contacts have admitted that, like me, they have given up with the new tree program altogether and have reverted to using the older viewer to access their own and shared trees. We'll be totally up s*** creek if/when the older program is removed. The problem is quite definitely at GR's end! |

After I'd posted up this thread, I had another look, and I noticed that there is a tab at the top of the tree viewer that you can click on which selects the view you get of the tree - it's called 'Change view' and it has a pull-down menu next to it, 'Immediate Family', 'Full Tree', Ancestors and Descendants. I have never changed this to full tree because it would be mad with my tree, but my theory now is that if somebody else has theirs set to full tree and you view their tree, it changes your setting to full tree and then when you try to view your own tree, it tries to display the full tree unless you change it back to 'immediate family' first. But if you exit the window and click on 'My family tree' it must get your original settings back. So if anybody else has the same problem, try changing the view to Immediate Family. Kate. |

I've certainly noticed that large trees take ages and sometimes do not work at all. I suspect its more to do with the amount of traffic on the GR site than any fault at your end. Anne |

Sometimes when I try to view my own tree on the new tree viewer, it takes ages trying to load it and then it says that something to do with Macromedia Flash Player is unresponsive or something. If I exit from the window and then try again, it works fine. This happened just now after I had been looking at somebody else's tree - they only had about 100 people in their tree but mine has way over 1000 people in it, and I'm just wondering if it could be something to do with the fact that her whole tree could be displayed at once but mine can only be displayed a chunk at a time. Was GR's tree program confused and trying to display my whole tree at once? Does this sound plausible to anyone? Kate. |
