I have searched for the marriage of Edward Groom to Eliza (maiden name unknown) and cannot find it. Edward was born in London in 1845 and Eliza was born in Oxfordshire in 1853. They had a daughter Florence born 1871 in London, and on the 1881 census she is the only daughter listed (although Florence Saunders and Richard Groom are both listed as visitors).I am assuming that Florence was the only child, so the marriage must have taken place sometime between 1869 (when Eliza would have been 16) and 1871 as Florence was born.I have searched and can find nothing, maybe i am missing something. Thanks Fee |

The 1871 shows Edwin and Eliza as born c1844( Stepney and Bethnal Green respectively) with children Edwin and Eliza so I don't think that was the marriage. Have you got Edward and Eliza together in 1871 or have you surmised Eliza is the mother from 1881 Census? |

Edward is listed as single in 1901. Perhaps they never married. I don't see an appropriate birth for Florence either. Rose |

Thanks very much for your help guys. Edward and Eliza are definateley Florence parents,1881 census shows her as being born 1871 and the 1901 census shows her as being born in 1874. I would have thought that Edward and Eliza did get married, he is obvioulsy from a well to do family, him being a solicitor and his brother Richard an architect, im sure they would never have considered 'living in sin'. We were told that Florence came from a wealthy family and her parents were not too happy with her marriage to Henry Macro, a coach driver (horses rather than engines). They apparently disowned her.I am assuming that Henry was the driver that took Edward to and from work each day, thus meeting and falling in love with Florence. The more i research the more confused i get. Thanks again Fee |

Thanks Reg. On the 1881 census Florence mother is listed as Eliza, her father listed as Edward, and as her surname is Groom, i assume he MUST be the father.Having said that, maybe they married after she was born. That would make them just a little hypocritical for shunning Florence for marrying Henry.I am so confused.LOL Thanks again Fee |

Hypocrisy was alive and well in Victorian England...........just as it is now!! The marriage was clearly after JFM 1871, and Florence must have been born by then to be aged 10 on 1881 census.......... Reg |

I have checked marriages from 1871 to 1881 and can find no marriage listed for Edward and Eliza.Other than using a ouija board and contacting them myself, i really can think of nothing else to do. I guess the Groom connecting to my tree ends here. Thanks everyone for all you help. Fee |

As Rose said he states he is single on the 1901 census, where is he on the 1891 - is he still with Eliza as wife. Do you have a death for Eliza before 1901? Was his brother Richard enumerated twice on the 1881, once with his parents and once with Eliza and Edward.....not that it has got anything to do it ...........just curious. Regards Gail |
