Please be very careful when using a Family Crest you find on the Internet. Many of them are complete inventions. The few which are genuine, will have rightful owners who may be very annoyed at someone with absolutely no entitlement, claiming them as their own. OC

thanks for that o.c. is there a difference between english and american crests for the same surname ? thanks linda x

Lin - I think it depends on how elaborate they think the americans would like a crest! LOL Its all pretty rubbishy nonsense.

I think what you really mean is a Coat of Arms, a Crest is only the upper segment of a Coat of Arms. Unless someone is granted a Coat of Arms there is little point in displaying one simply because it has been granted to someone of the same name, it would be totally meaningless. Jennifer

hi carol when i go on the genealogyprinters site i cant find any crests or coats of arms only info about tree charts and printing etc.. which look fantastic. and something i will consider after xmas i think - and on the heraldry site there is a wakefield but it is a black and white coat of arms and every other wakefield coat of arms i have seen has been blue and yellow and very different in appearance. as i am doing a book on a friends family tree (as asuprise present as she has just become a grandma for the first time ) i want it to be the right one thanks for everything love linda x

A Coat of Arms is specific to ONE person, not to a family. An expert can read the genealogical history of a family from a real Coat of Arms. Family Crests are a bit more ambiguous, but really apply to one particular branch of a family - and as I said, lots are pure inventions and were never registered with the College of Heralds. The Victorians were particularly good at inventing Family Crests and Coats -of -Arms - as ever, you can buy anything if you have the money! To get the right one, you would need to contact the College of Heralds, and provide genealogical information - not a cheap do, and not fast either. OC
