William Arthur Short born 28/08/1911 in Manchester(grandfather). Fathers supposed name was William Short and mothers name was Jane Watson. Cannot locate a match. Ordered and received a Birth Cert for my grandfather but fathers name was listed as Arthur Zeminder and mothers name as Harriet Jane. That was a good waste of some cash. Not sure where i should be looking as i'm a newbie at all this. |

There isn't a William A Short registered in 1911 with that mother's maiden name. How do you know that's the maiden name and how do you know that's the right year? Have you checked the indexes several years each side of 1911? Janice |

What is the source of your info about his birth date and birthplace? Do you have any documents to back up the info? Reg |

No concrete information. We only have the Largs Bay listing William Arthur short boarding on 06/03/29 and his date of birth as being 28/08/1911. We have his parent/guardian signing him on board as a Mrs J Watson of 19 St Pauls Square, LIverpool and she was a Laundress. When he was married he put down that both his parents were deceased and that their names were William Short and Jane Watson. He also told a family member that he was born in Manchester and later moved to Liverpool. My father obtained some army records from when my pop served (WW2) and they had the same information. It was also mentioned that he had a sister called Poppy and possibly another sister and brother. We have nothing to go on that is concrete. |

If she signed as Mrs J Watson, then surely she would have re-married after William was born? |

I'm thinking that possibly the woman that signed my pop on board could have been his grandmother. That is only an assumption. But my grandfather did list his mothers name as Jane Watson(maiden name) on his marriage certificate. |

Either there's another Short-Watson family in Leigh or Jane isn't the mother's name but the grandmother's. |

So on my records i have him born in August of 1911 yet the birth index you're referring to is showing quarter 4 of 1912 ... is that correct?. So he could have lied about his age for some reason? Would you know where i could go to find out the different districts? What would be near by to or under Manchester??? Thanks for all this - you guys are great. My eyes are opening wider and wider - this is definately addictive. |
