Hi Jody I sent you a pm, but in general sites which are by invite only operate that way to prevent multiple memberships by one person. and potential abuse of the site. Active members on this particular site have worked hard to create some useful reference threads on subjects like county boards, military sections and Records office/register offices and family tree software threads. You can add to the threads and post direct links to websites, so for instance if you are researching Hampshire rellies and have found a gem of a website for the county you can paste the url in a thread as a direct link. One thread by yours truly lists every register office in England, complete with website link, e-mail contact, telephone and address details. So if you need a specific office then all the details are in one place. There is also a searchable database of names allowing you to link to people researching the same names/areas without having the problems of tree viewing. Search criteria can be as little as place of birth, (handy to see who has researched in a certain part of the country)

Roll up, Roll up. Just 15 invites left. Who would like one?

Totally agree Glen!! Also, you never know when you might want to 're-visit' an old thread yourself - I asked a question a couple of years ago about an old great uncle of mine - knew I'd found the answer once - couldn't find the info the other day in my very cluttered filing system - put a couple of words in the search box and lo and behold up popped the info!!!!!! regards Looby

Hi Wanda, The delete does have a purpose, for instance removing duplicate posts once noticed to keep the thread tidy, if I happen to find I post something that is posted just prior to my post i will delete it so not duplicated. GR is a big site and I am sure are not short of server space, as has been mentioned, if the threads are left on, they can be of use for follow on posts to refer back too. Frequently posters ask a similar question twice, and to refer back to the old thread is useful. Obviously if deleted we cannot do that. I do despair when people do not appear to take any notice of advice given, ie obtain birth certificate to prove parents, then later post asking for parents!! Keith

Sorry,I must be guilty in this because I put a post on,got answers, thanked people but thought it best to delete to give space to other people. If thats the case why dont they take delete off as I am new to this so thought I was being helpful by deleting. Now you have said that I realise that my question and answers could be helpful to others.Blubbering on further....Im not the person in question that they are on about by the way!!

What drives me even madder, is when I carefully bookmark a useful and informative thread, only to find later that some people have deleted their replies to it, making the thread a complete nonsense. OC

Sorry MM was forgetting the 38 way tie for the election result. If i don't come back later i'm away in 'register office' land on a certain other site we can't really name here. LOL. BTW the site is by invitation only, if anyone is interested just pm me.

Ain't that the truth!! Several times i have gone back to a thread and found it gone within an hour or two. I don't know which is worst, deleting or not answering back on your own threads. Yes Gillian, i think it was the same thread, i did ramble a bit with the reply but it wasn't exactly worthy of a two word answer.

Not like the old days eh Glen. I wonder if people even check their threads once posted, as there is rarely an acknowledgment on them.

Glen In Tinsel Knickers Report 27 Nov 2006 21:05

threads are posted, answers given that may help many people but the topic originator deletes the thread in less than a day without so much as a thankyou. It's just plain ignorant and rude. Makes you wonder if it is worth giving an answer!!!!!!!
