Thanks I'll try some of these and see how I get on. Scotlands people is great but some relatives have disappeared and I think they must have been in England or more likely Ireland. Thanks for your suggestions Helena

Ancestry is great for BMD's and the census. If you register with Ancestry as a guest then you can look at all BMD indexes from July 1837 to Dec 2004, indexes to 1881 and 1901 England and Wales censuses. You will either have to pay for other censuses or ask on the boards for a look up. Certificates will cost £7 from the GRO when ordered online with the full referance. If in doubt ask on board.

I mostly use Ancestry, Family Search and FreeBMD, but if you are stuck post details and people will help. I have rarely used Scotlands People and therefore find it more difficult Best Wises Kay

I like freebmd as a starting point. The 1881 census is free to search on the IGI. It might also be worth signing up for a fortnight's trial of ancestry and having a browse. Familyhistoryonline is also useful particularly for burials. Anne

I've used Scotlandspeople very successfully but can't seem to do so well with other sites for people born /married/ died outside Scotland. What are the best sites? Anyone able to help?
