No worries, Susie! The pitfalls of working with transcriptions! ... even those done by cousins! Cheers Richard

No, it definitely does not have ''blind'' or anything else written on the originals - there is just a tick mark (except for the column header, of course!). Are you sure that you're looking at a scanned image of the original handwriting, or do you have a typed index? Read my reply above - the tick marks mean that they were born outside of Notts county, that's all!

I just looked at the image. The tick marks in the disabilities column are enumerators marks from when they were compiling the stats - they don't mean that those ticked had disabilities (if they did, it would name the disability - e.g. blind, deaf, etc). Looking at the names that are ticked on that page (and on the next few pages), it seems to be everyone who was born outside of the county of Notts - so I would imagine that they were counting the numbers of people not born in the county. I'm sure that it doesn't mean that they were blind! Richard

I thought the records on Ancestry were digitized copies of the original. Cant see Ancestry taking the trouble to somehow doctor them. Have you looked at the original copy not just the indexed list

Hi The disabilities column is not transcribed on the Ancestry index, but it does appear on the image of the original form. If you give us the details (census ref or names/ages), can check the image on Ancestry for you if you like.

about 5 years ago my husbands cousin visited newark records off to look at the census returns.when she sent her her findings we were shocked.in the last column of every male member were the words deaf dumb and blind! this included hubbys gt grandfather,gt gt grandfather and gt gt gt grandfather. however,on ancestry there isnt anything written to back this up? could this be a mistake on the originals or dont ancestry add these details? lol. im really confused.can anyone shed some light on this mystery for me please lol susie
