Hi Jacqueline If you have a date of birth it is best to phone Gov records Office Northern Ireland (GRONI). They will do a search for £5.50, and if you don't want the actual cert. they will just send the details. Also try Ros Davies web site for County Down (google). Ancestry Ireland has searchable databases which may have your ancestor. These are free for searches, but £6 for 5 details on one name, in one of the databases, eg birth or marriage or death. Also give Belfast Forum a whirl on the web. I have just tried all these with a bit of success very recently. Regards Jen.

thanks for all your replies. if i have a date of birth how do i go about getting the birth certificate, she was born in holywood, county down, i don't know her parents. looked to see if can order online but i don't think my google is working properly

The sad truth is that once your ancestors disappear back into Ireland then it's extremely difficult to find any trace of them. If you can't afford to hire a researcher or pay for a visit to Dublin then it's pretty much a dead-end. Also, if you don't know the exact village/parish that you're ancestor lived in then it's even more difficult, and many Irish families only put 'Ireland' down as 'Place of Birth' on English census returns. My gtx3 grandparents both came over from Ireland in the late 1830s. They married in Ireland. And both were born in c1815. One of them put 'Dublin, Ireland' down in a census. I know the wife's maiden name and that's practically all I know about them. IGI has lots of Irish records so maybe you'll strike lucky. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a trend in Ireland for people to transcribe local records and make them available online, such as we have here in England. Depends which part of Ireland and when. I believe all BMD events were registered after 1864, but some before (i.e non-Catholic marriages) The staff at Joyce House will do searches of the index for a fee, if it's in the present Republic, rather than Ulster. www.groireland.ie/ Jay

I`ve found one that isn`t free but very helpful-they will give you an estimate of the cost for a search -it`s £12.50 an hour. Unfortunately they didn`t find my ggm but gave me a list of possibles in the whole of Ireland. It`s familyulster. Happy hunting, Ros
