When there is a record on the 1837online birth, eg, Cecil Taylor, I am looking for a Cecil J Taylor in Sunderland. Is the middle name or initial always present. Thanks Karen

Depends how he was registered. 1837 only shows what was on the registration. If they left out the J, it wouldn't be there.

Hi Orangeblossom Tracey, Thanks, I don't have to rule him out now. Karen

If it was a census record, the middle initial would not necessarily be recorded if the enumerator was not told!

it could have been a name added after confirmation or marriage or through inheritance

What year was the census record you have, it could be on a later one, But quite often if someone died in the family the name was added to another childs earlier name

Just a thought Karen, which may help. Was he the first born child? I searched for one of my rellies, at her marriage was Annie Tate Allinson, couldn't find it all all. Suddenly realised she was born before her parents married, she was registered as Annie Tate (Tate was her mothers maiden name)
