Sophie It looks like it may be telling you about the address as in: 'Lu Serg G Garrison, Royal Engineers' - not completely sure about it and it may be a foreign garrison (as in France). Your best bet would be to join this forum here: http://www.1914-1918.net/ and go to the third box along where it says 'For Tourists' then go to the bottom of that box and clickon the bit which tells you to 'Join the Great War Forum'. This is an excellent website which deals mainly with World War One but I'm sure there will be someone on there who will be able to tell you what you have in your possession. What is it you're looking at (is it on a marriage cert or on the census? all this helps people to decipher the writing) |

Nowadays, L/Sgt is acting sergent. Rod PS RE could be Royal Engineers |

L/Sgt was Lance Sergeant, a rank between Corporal and Sergeant. Phased out of the army some time after WW2 but still retained in the Guards instead of Corporal. God knows what the rest is - where did it come from, a Marriage cert? Keith |

Hi not sure about the Lu (not heard of Lt Sgt) but the rest could be something like Sergeant Royal Garrison Reserve Regiment. |

R could be Royal? I'm with Orange on the rest of it. |

Something to do with his Regiment and the Garrison he was from. I think he was a Sergeant. Lu maybe Leiutenant or Luton. Don't know what R or RE is. |

Hello, Just think ive found a relative George Smith, but his occupation is down as Lu Serg R Garr Re Regt? can someone tell what this is please? I take its something to do with the military? He was born in 1860 in Luton, then he married and moved to Yorkshire i think. many thanks |
