Hi everyone! I am driving myself crazy trying to remember where I can view directories online... I want to look at actual images of the pages of directories like Pigot's and Kelly's Directory of Staffordshire I know that the website exists because I was using it months (years?!) ago but I can't remember what it was called. And I can't find where I wrote the address down. Better filing needed in future. Does anyone out there know of any websites? Wish my brain would wake up! Thanks to anyone who can help Cheryl |

Suzanne The site consists of scanned pages from the commercial directories. Each gives some info about the location and history of each town, and then info about the residents. It will tell you for instance who was on the council, who was a magistrate, and often who had charge of the workhouse. It will then give you the residents, sometimes alphabetically, sometimes by street, sometimes both. Early editions only recorded the gentry and those pursuing a trade or profession (but I have a feeling this was sometimes very selective!) Jan |
