Why not contact the French National Archives? They may be able to suggest somone at Longwy who could place this in context: http://www.archivesnationales.culture.gouv.fr/chan/ Denis

Thanks for the really helpful replies, I'll certainly make use of the information. I guess contacting Kew will be my first port of call. I'm new to this site and I can honestly say that this is the most helpful message board I've ever posted on! Many thanks again. Phil

Wow Phil what an incredible document to have!!! Kew would be the best place to find any papers on your ancestor - from the dates you have quoted it seems it may be from the Napoleonic Wars - but only the papers will confirm that for you. You would need to search through the W/O series and they are quite simple to search through - luckily these papers still surive. If you can't go yourself there may be someone willing to do a look up for you - if not if you google Kevin Asplin, who has his own website, he will do a look-up for you for a small nominal fee - you will need to contact him through his website and there is a link on there. Have you tried an online search at TNA? Not sure what records they hold now as more and more are coming on-line, but it must be worth a quick look - you might even be able to download something there and then. Good luck with it!!

National Archives at Kew would be your best bet. If you cant get there they may be able to advise by phone. I,ve always found them very helpful Shirley

I'm pretty new to the family history game and one of the main reasons I got into it was to find out more about a document we have in our family. It is in French but the translation is.. 'English Prisoners of War It is permitted for Mr Latus Thomas to pass through the gates of the town and once there, to present this document to the police orderly or the gatekeeper. Signed by the camp comander at Longwy, 28 April 1813' I've managed to trace my family back to a Thomas Latus b. 1762 in Hull but was wondering if anyone has an idea of how to find out more about him using the information in the POW document. Thanks for any help. Phil
