Have a couple of relatives in tree who have married and would like to link them together using FTM 2005. My question is once these people are linked together and I export file to GR tree how will this be shown because there is no such facility on GR. Would this cause any hassles and has anyone done this before? Thanks in advance

GR will duplicate any linked people. So if you have a man from one family marrying into another, he will be shown under both. Shouldn't cause any problems, unless you give access to someone who doesn't know about it.

If you mean you have cousins marrying cousins (therefore they are duplicated people) you can use the 'merge duplicate individuals' on FTM. By doing that you will have each duplicated name appear just once on your FTM file and they will appear with all rellies in the correct place. If yopu haven't merged any individuals then make a backup copy to disc/stick BEFORE you merge any names, if you accidently merge the wrong person the backup allows you to return to your original file and start again. If you create a GEDCOM from FTM then when you upload it to GR, the GR tree will show the tree just the same as it does in FTM. The GR tree builder uses the details in the gedcom file to produce a tree, it can only display what the file is telling it. ********** Any notes you have included will also be transferred (unless you create a second gedcom which excludes notes). You would be best looking at the online help section on FTM and searching under 'GEDCOM, MERGE INDIVIDUALS and BACKUP FILES' There are various articles about creating gedcom files, exporting/importing and excluding notes and data fields.

This is a really useful thing to do in FTM which I learnt about from someone here a few months ago when I raised the question of linking cousins who married. Since originally exporting my tree from here to FTM and re-importing it, I've had to do it numerous times (maybe my family is more inbred than most!!??) and it appears to work OK every time. The only niggle I have is that when it reopens here, in GR, it often doesn't open showing my details but those of someone else. Go on, take the plunge. Export it!
