Sorry to sound discouraging but whether Mary was widowed, separated or single is sort of irrelevant - if no father was named on either his birth or marriage certificates it is almost sure that, short of a miracle, you wont be able to find out who his father was. Have you checked to see how many Mary Herrings there were born around the same time as 'your Mary'? (it should show up on the 1891 census), and it might make it easier to decide which one is likely to be yours with regard a marriage. Since she gave her name as Mary on her son's certificate but the marriage you found was Mary Ann, it is possible that these are two different people. Thanks shirly, do i order it the same way as i do birth certs on line. You may be shirly getting the hang of this. iam gerry more and more confused. thanks for your help Gerry |

Well, she would be entitled to reg the birth in her current name even if she had separated from her husband,but then again, if she didnt want his name associated with her child in any way then she could have reverted to her maiden name . if you can find her on earlier census with her family ,then if you wanted to confirm or exclude the marriage then the father on the cert may help to do this. Its whether you want to get the cert or not. you can specify her fathers name as a checking point so if its not correct then you will get a partial refund. Shirley |

Hi looking for some help My grandfather was born John herring Stepney 1912. birth cert shows Mother Mary herring no father named. i have checked grandfathers marriage cert. again no father named.I have found a birth cert for mary in st botolph 1882. this tied in with what i found in the census. However i have also found a possible marriage. There is a mary ann herring married in 1905 in st georges in the east. would it be possible that mary married and then divorces, or they went there seperate ways, did people divorse then? Would she have gone back to use her maiden name in1912 for my grandads birth? any ideas, does anyne know what would have been the norm. Could she have had an affair and thats why she used her maiden name. Just another line for me to try so anyones thoughts appriciated>.. when your stuck you look for any line of hope.... regards gerry |
