Herbert Rice was my grandfather and died 1940 I am trying to find more information about his life and my grand mother Hannah (Annie) Rice (formerly Rees). Are you able to help please? Herbert Rice was born in Sherston Magna, Wilts, but Hannah was from the Aberdare area. My grandmother died (1933) when my mother was only 12 years old and so grew up not knowing very much about her mother. My mother is now 85 in poor health and it would mean the world to her to find out more about her mother Hannah (Annie) Rees. I have been able to trace my grandfather's family back top 1700's but have failed to trace any background on my grandmother. My grandfather was married in 1893 in Cwmbach, Aberdare (and his first wife died very young within 18 months of the marriage). He then met my grandmother in the Aberdare, Mid Glam area but I have been unable to trace marriage? They had a child in 1898 who died after three weeks and is buried in Sherston Magna, Any advice on finding more about my grandmother would be most appreciated. Time is of the essence. |

Hi Do you have the death certificate for your grandmother who died in 1933? That would confirm her name and previous surnames, her age, status (married, single etc) and thus be the first step since you can't find a marriage. Where have you looked for the marriage as freebmd is not complete - have you trawled ancestry or 1837 quarter by quarter. What area are we looking in? There are lots of helpful people on here - if you post a few more details, I'm sure someone will uncover some clues for you. regards |

I just thought I should point out that a 1933 death certificate will not tell you Hannah / Annie's previous surname(s), but anyway, it should have some information that might help. I'll have a look for the marriage.... Kate. |

I think somebody found the death registration for the child who died in 1898, didn't they? If you don't already have his birth and death certificates, it might be worth getting them to see if they give you further information. Kate. |

Hmmm... drawing a blank here at the moment. Does your mother have her birth certificate, which would confirm her mother's name? It could be that the marriage is one of those that got lost between the local register office and the GRO, so if you know where they got married you could try asking the register office that is local to that place if they can find the marriage certificate.
