Bad experiences with registry offices?

Just wondering if anyone had had bad experiences with registry offices? We spent three days in the East Midlands last summer hunting down bits about my mum's side of the family. We had two fantastic helpful people at two of the registry offices we went to, but one in the third office (don't know if I should identify the place so I won't) was so patronising. She actually said (we'd given her dates, names, quarters, asking her if we could get a certain certficate) 'Do you actually know what you're doing?', in the patronising sense, not the helpful one. And through parish records, I'd - at that time - traced said branch to c. 1769. Have to add, though, that when phoning said office for guidance on buying certificates, the woman on the phone that day couldn't have been more helpful.
