Mhairi Queen of Scots Report 21 Nov 2006 14:31

For sometime now the parents of my grt grt grt grt grandfather have been causing me some problems. Henry Hollinsworth c1826 in Shropshire married in 1847 to Eliza France. On the marriage cert his fathers name has been shortened and i cant, neither can anyone else who has looked, make it out. His occupation was Exciseman. When the 1841 census came out i thought i would finally get Henry with his family but it didnt happen. Though i did find him living with what i thought, and had some later confirmed, his brothers and sister. John Hollinsworth c1816 Eli Hollinsworth c1820 Lancashire (confirmed) Mary Hollinsworth c1826 Henry Hollinsworth c1826 Shropshire Elias Hollinsworth c1830 Shropshire (confirmed) Now on the IGI i have found JOHN HOLLINSWORTH Gender: Male Christening: 01 JAN 1817 Cathedral, Manchester, Lancashire, England ELIZABETH HOLLINGSWORTH Gender: Female Christening: 01 JAN 1817 Cathedral, Manchester, Lancashire, England DAVID HOLLINSWORTH Gender: Male Christening: 01 JAN 1817 Cathedral, Manchester, Lancashire, England ELI HOLLINSWORTH Gender: Male Christening: 04 APR 1819 Cathedral, Manchester, Lancashire, England Parents John Hollinsworth and Harriet (Harriot). There are a few other baptisms with the same parents, even one with a Henry though its out by several years (though i cant discount it) and in the right area, though i can rule the ones in Yorkshire out as i found them on the 1841 census. Now when looking for a marriage for John and Harriet we get a marriage between a John Hollinsworth and a Harriet Kirk. The thing thats got me thinking that this is the right parents is that 1) In the 1841 Henry and co are living with a George and Harriet Stoker, she's older than him and i'm pretty sure they are a married couple. Harriet Kirks second marriage? I cant find it on IGI or the Index's. 2) On Henry's marriage cert one of the witness's was a Kirk, again bad writing and only an initial (beginning to think i have a hand written copy though and not an origanal) 3) How many Eli Hollinsworth's where there in the world? At that time, born in that area? Any ideas on how i can confirm parentage? The father was an Exciseman and i know that the NA holds information in relation to them but i dont have the resources or time at the moment to take a trip down there. I have found some papers that mention a John Hollingsworth (the name gets mis-spelled that way a lot) in relation to excise but have no idea if its my guy or not. I had originally that i would have an easy enough time with this side due to some of the uncommon names, unfortunately those are the ones that disappear on me. Any suggestions welcomed Mhairi p.s i have the marriage cert scanned if anyone wants to take a look at it.

There is a registered One Name Study of the HOLLINSWORTH ( and variants) surname. Maybe the researcher will be able to confirm what you have found. Go to the Guild of One Name Studies site and click on Registered Names. Details of how to contact are shown there. Gwyn
