If you check the Historical Directories website there are several trade directories which cover Haydon Bridge. For example the Kelly's Directory of Northumberland, 1894 states: ' The almshouses for 20 poor persons of the chapelry, founded by the trustees in connection with Shaftoe's School charity, were in 1878 reduced by the Charity Commisssioners to 10, the weekly dole being increased from three to six shillings weekly, with an allowance of coals; the charity is managed by a body of seven trustees.'

does anybody know any history of the alms houses in Shaftoe Terrace Haydon Bridge? My GGGGrandmother Susanna Jackson lived there according to the 1901 census with her one remaining unmarried daughter. how/why would she end up there/ Martin.
