Does any body kow or can you give me any ideas on how i can find out about local information about Shoreditch (london) in particular Flemming street, which is no longer there. My Grandad was born and lived there for a few years so would like to know a bit about the area. I visited the shoreditch lib. and to say people werent very helpful was saying the least! Have tired putting it in to various search engines with not much luck. any ideas would be great! Thanks sharon :> |

Have you tried the London streets website of descriptions of streets that Charles Booth produced? Or Dickens Dictionary of London. There is a website for Booths Notebooks. Cant remember the addy - hang on, Ill google. http://booth.lse.ac.uk/ Click on poverty maps of London and shoreditch is district 5. You should be able to find the street description in the notes there. Try this one: http://www.victorianlondon.org/ Im being hassled by OH to get out to B AND Q |

You could also try the London Metropolitan Archives. They cover all of that area. If you are near anough to get to Shoredtich Library you might be interested in a trip to the Archives. They hold regular introductory classes to show how to get the best out of them - I'm going to the one next month and can't wait! Sue |

Hi What the staff at Shoreditch Lib should have done is refer you to their own Hackney Local History & Archives dept as Flemming St is in an area now covered by the London Borough of Hackney. (This was a standard and easy enquiry when I worked in public libraries!). That would be a good place to start. see link from Hackney Council website http://www.hackney.gov.uk/ca-archives Hope that helps Malcolm |
