Also folks, the surnames? Rodgers is the main one. Do you think Woodhead and Whittaker are the others?

He could be in a public house or similiar. The modern lndlord is usually a member of the local Licensed Victualler Comittee. Try a trade directory for the area and time, he may be listed as a publican, hotelier etc.

Good grief! there's another one on the next page. Same address, a visitor John Whittaker, married, 55, sickle manufacturer, Ridgeway, Derbyshire.

Thanks, going to go and try and match that up now, it's the worst type of writing I have come across so far! There is a John Whittaker on there too (i think)!

I agree that the occupation is licensed victualler. The first names I believe are Robert, Ann, Louisa, Catharine, Mary ?something, Herbert, Lucy, Jane, Maria and John. Mary ?something is an assistant. Herbert is apprentice to ?something worker or maker. Lucy is domestic servant. Not sure about place names. You'd probably have a better idea than I do, I'm in Canada so don't know my geography of Britain. Hope it helps. Margaret

Thanks, can you tell me what anything else is. I honestly can hardly read a word of it. Even some of the names!

On the 1851 Census I have a family by the name of Rodgers that appear as Rodpe! The problem is the writing on the Census page - I can hardly make out any of it - especially his occupation. The family can be found by entering Lucy Woodhead aged 18 b.1833. Area Sheffield Yorkshire. The numbers on the page if they help are ED 11 Household Schedule No 32. At the bottom of the page it says family continues on next page. Please could someone that is good with the old style of writing check it for me.
