By mistake while searching the census info on Ancestry I typed in the name Mary and hit enter instead of tab! Hundreds of Mary's came up with no surname - one even says 'child of Mary'! I looked at some of the original records for these 'one namers' and there is only one name on the Census document. |

Another trick is to type the surname in the first name box (leaving the surname box blank) it's amazing how many hits you can get. |

You should see how many there are recorded as female, male, daughter of, son of, unnamed, unknown etc - the list is endless! I have just typed 'unknown' and for 1851 there are 125 entries, which include: A female name unknown A male name unknown A man unknown A shanger name unknown (?) A spainer name unknown (?) A woman unknown Eight persons enigrants names unknown lodger unknown Name Unknown One Woman Suppole To Be of Unsound Unird and Left This Day Unknown! Sam x |

Have you ever put just initials in the first and surname boxes of the 1901 www(.)censusonline(.)com then?, I always just put in initials before doing a person search. Jenny |

Janet You could try the local Record Office to where the prison/institution was, they may have admission/discharge records. Also try the National Archives site.....They may now have the prison records. Chris |
