and could really do with some advice please! I have found the entry which gets me started with my father's birth but now what do I do? How do I get a look at the certificate? Need to see his father's details....he wasn't married to my grandmother...

Apply for the birth certificate. It will obviously list the mother's details but may also list the father's details as well. Sue

Don't want to dishearten you but the certificates come by post and when you do receive it your Father's father's details may not be on the certificate.

Sorry to butt in but, Janet, does the lack of father's details automatically mean illegitimancy? Both my grandparents have no fathers on their certs and although I know my granddad was born out of wedlock my mum reckons her mum's parents were married and the father died when gran was about 8. Rob

Both parents should be listed if they were married.

Robert If they married AFTER the child was born, then they could legitimise the child, which would entail issuing a new certificate with the father's details on it. But - they had to go to the Registrar and ask, it was not automatic. (How would the Registrar know that they had subsequently married?) OC

My father has his father's surname - I dont know if this was legally done or just accepted? Is there anyway of knowing this?My grandmother also used the same name.....
