1875 adoption

if you have family who you think may have been adopted in 1875/6 how can you go about finding out, thanks jean.

Legal adoption didn't begin until the 1920s so this was probably an informal arrangement - perhaps between family members or friends. Some 'adoptions' were arranged by charities who did draw up a formal agreement, others by the workhouse board who would foster orphan children out to save the cost on the public purse in which case there may be records amongst the workhouse archives.
