Glad Alan was able to solve your mystery :-) Just to answer the question about the marriage index, it wasn't until 1911 that the GRO indexes recorded spouse's maiden name for marriages (and mother's maiden name for births). Before then we have to buy the certificate, look for all names with same ref on one of the transcription sites (but this usually just narrows the choice down to 2 or four spouses rather than giving an exact match), or hope the event took place somewhere that the local authority have put their own index online. |

Hi Alan, thank you, thank you, thank you, you have just made my day! I was so hoping it was Caroline Valentine, you see there is a story my Nan told me about a Caroline Valentine that is buried in a church in Hockley Essex & nobody really knew who she was in the family & now I know. Sadly my Nan died earlier this year before I got hooked on this family tree stuff & wasn't in a fit mental state to talk much sense, so you have just unravelled a mystery. many thanks Clare |

I have been trying to find the maiden name of Caroline who married Alfred Samuel Yull. The marriage index shows a marriage 1871 in Stepney 1st quarter but no spouses maiden name! Why is that? |
