Hi Alison I CAN'T believe that i've missed this one. I was always told grandad was Henry known as Harry. Is it possible he was registered as a Harry even though he appears as Henry on his marriage cert ? and as Henry on the1891 and 1901 census THANKYOU i will definitely send for this one and will let you know

Have you tried looking at different ways of the Spelling of the Surname. I hunted for a couple of years for my Grandfather's registration in the name of Manning and it turned up eventually as Manham. Nothing like I would have thought of looking for. Carol

Thankyou Glen. I have noted the phone number i will give them a ring. It's good to hear they don't charge if they can't find the entry. having spent £28 already. CHRIS

It is possible that the birth registration never made the GRO index but is in the local index, there might be a way to have the local index searched free..The local index is more complete than the GRO index. The local registrar will have all the original local bmd registers, (they can supply certs),the council website is currently being redesigned and the e-mail link is not working. (see phone number below) If you were to order the cert from them it will cost £7 (no GRO ref required, they use an entirely different system anyway.), if they cannot find the cert they will return your cheque, routinely they will search a couple of years either side of the year you quote. The phone number for the countywide registration service is 0845 6789016. It might be worth giving them a ring and explain the situation and asking for their advice. Glen

I have now failed four times to get my grandfathers birth cert !! He was Henry (though they called him Harry) Powell born in 1886 in Madeley Shropshire. Parents Richard 1851 and Sarah Ann 1851.As far as i'm aware he had no middle name .Is there a chance that for some reason he was not registered ? what possible reasons? The family were catholic could it just have been registered on the church record? Any advice thankyou Christine
